Earth Day was a lovely opportunity for our class to celebrate and learn together. The theme of the lesson was caring for the planet: pupils considered what is good for the Earth and what harms it, and how each of us can help to protect it. The children wrote down and drew their ideas on ‘5 ways to help our Earth’ worksheets.

Earth Day falls on 22 April. Started in 1970 in the United States, it is now one of the most widely celebrated environmental days in the world.

The pupils danced to the rhythm of a song, learning through play. Along the way, they also met new soft sounds: ‘zi’ and ‘ź’. Both spellings represent the same sound. Before a vowel we write ‘zi’ – as in the word ‘ziemia’ (earth), which fitted the theme of the lesson perfectly – whereas before a consonant and at the end of a word we write ‘ź’, as in ‘źrebak’ (foal) or ‘weź’ (take).

We also said a sad farewell to our Ms Ania. A heart-shaped farewell collage bore the words: ‘Ms Ania, thank you, we will miss you’. We hope Ms Ania will visit us soon and see how beautifully our Polish is developing at the Polish school.
