Child Safety Code

The Frederic Chopin Polish Saturday School in Croydon operates on Saturdays from 9:00 to 12:30, except during breaks between terms. Every child attending the school must be registered, and parents are required to pay the appropriate fees. Attendance at the Polish Saturday School is voluntary and is only supplementary to full-time education, in accordance with British law.

Drop-off and collection

Drop-off: Children under the age of 11 should be brought to school by an adult. Parents, or a person authorised by a parent, are responsible for the child arriving at school safely and for making sure that the child is in the classroom or the school building. Parents remain responsible for their children's safety until lessons begin.

Collection:

Children under the age of 11 must be collected by their parents, unless the parents authorise another adult to collect the child. The parent is responsible for informing the child's teacher of the name of the authorised person. Children over the age of 11 may go home from school on their own, unless their parents do not consent to this, in which case they must inform the teacher.

Children should be collected from school at 12:30 (by 12:45 at the latest). If a parent expects to be late, they must inform the school by phoning the child's class teacher. In such a case, it remains the parent's responsibility to arrange for the child to be collected by another authorised person. Class teachers are responsible for children waiting to be collected, making sure that the children do not leave the school premises on their own.

If the school receives no word from a parent who is running late, after 15 minutes the class teacher will try to contact the child's parent by phone, and in the meantime the child will remain in the teacher's care. For the first 15 minutes and for every further 15 minutes of lateness, the parent will have to pay a £5 penalty.

No contact

If it is not possible to contact a parent, the class teacher will contact the people (family members or friends of the child's parents) whose phone numbers were given on the form (personal details questionnaire). If none of these people can be contacted, after 1 hour the class teacher will contact the local police.

Pupil absence

Attendance at the Saturday school is voluntary and there is no legal obligation to send children there. However, the school expects to be informed of a child's foreseeable absence or of a decision to withdraw the child from the school.

Accidents

If a child has an accident, the child's parents will be informed immediately by phone. For minor injuries, the school nurse will give the child first aid at school. The child will remain in the care of the duty parent until they are ready to return to the classroom. For injuries requiring medical attention, an ambulance will be called or the child will be taken to the nearest hospital by one of the duty parents or a teacher.

Photography

The school will seek parents' written consent for photographs to be taken of children during lessons or school events.

Drugs, stimulants and over-the-counter medicines

Drugs, medicines that can be bought without a prescription and stimulants of any kind are not permitted on the school premises. The headteacher may permanently exclude from the school a child who takes or sells drugs, even if it is a first offence. Drinking or possessing alcohol, and possessing or smoking cigarettes, is prohibited for pupils on the school premises.
