Our School

A school with heart. Learning with character.

In South Croydon, together we are building a place where the Polish language and culture become a natural part of a child’s world.

Moments together. Great memories.

For families

Your child matters most to us!

Our school is a meeting place for families from Croydon and the neighbouring boroughs of Sutton, Merton, Kingston and Bromley. We teach Polish language, history and culture, supporting children growing up between languages. We follow the core curriculum for Polish pupils abroad as well as programmes developed by our teachers.

We focus on acceptance, safety and engaging lessons. Our staff continually develop their qualifications. Experience of working with autistic children and individual learning pathways help us respond attentively to our pupils’ needs.

Growing up in two worlds

Between languages – at home

We want Polish to sound to children like laughter in the playground, to open up like a favourite book and to connect them with their loved ones in Poland. Because a Saturday school is more than lessons – it is a place where children growing up in England feel that Polish culture is their home too.

From pre-school to A-level

Learning pathways

We also prepare children for First Holy Communion and work in cooperation with Polska Macierz Szkolna (Polish Educational Society) in England.

  1. Pre-school and Zerówka (pre-school year)

Play, songs and conversation in Polish. The youngest children get used to learning and to the rhythm of a school Saturday.

  2. Early primary education

The pupil initiation ceremony, followed by learning to read and write in Polish – letter by letter, in line with the core curriculum.

  3. Pre-GCSE

We develop vocabulary, reading comprehension and the writing of longer texts – the foundation for the GCSE exam.

  4. GCSE

Preparation for the GCSE exam in Polish, a qualification recognised in the British education system.

  5. A-level

Literature, history and culture at matura level (the Polish secondary school-leaving exam), and preparation for the A-level exam in Polish.

The school’s patron is Frederic Chopin. Music, concerts and competitions are part of our community’s life; the school has a concert piano. Sport, art and drama complement learning and support children’s development.

Where we came from

Croydon is the largest administrative centre by population in so-called Greater London, and a large number of Poles live there and in the adjoining boroughs of Sutton, Merton, Kingston and Bromley. The Polish Saturday School in South Croydon was founded in response to requests from many parents who want their children not to lose their sense of belonging to the Polish culture from which their families come.

A centre of Polish life

We fully understand that for many Poles a Saturday school is a centre of Polish identity. We know how important it is for children to know Polish and to be able to communicate freely, in speech and in writing, with relatives and friends in Poland.

How we teach

We follow the core curriculum for Polish pupils studying outside Poland. Many of our teachers work successfully with curricula they have developed themselves, tailored to the children’s abilities. Through sport, art, music, drama and other creative activities, we develop children’s innate potential and abilities. A specially designed psychological and educational programme will help children develop their personalities to the full. We know how to work with autistic children and with children who require an individual course of learning. We want all our pupils to be able to use the knowledge they have gained confidently in Polish. Our school works in cooperation with Polska Macierz Szkolna (Polish Educational Society) in England, and prepares pupils for national examinations at GCSE level and for First Holy Communion.

Our teachers

We employ carefully selected staff with teaching qualifications and experience of teaching children in Great Britain, who are able to develop pupils’ individual talents in line with their innate potential and abilities. We continually improve our qualifications by taking part in training courses and workshops for teachers.
