Saturday's lessons took place in a solemn yet joyful atmosphere, full of references to Polish history, tradition and national identity. Pupils celebrated the Flag Day of the Republic of Poland together and reflected on the significance of the three May holidays: 1, 2 and 3 May.
Symbols, great Poles and the map of Poland
The children revised the national symbols and talked about their role in building a sense of community, as well as about the colours of the flag and the values associated with them. Flag Day has been celebrated on 2 May since 2004, and the following day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of 3 May 1791. Much attention was given to outstanding figures in Polish history and culture, including Frederic Chopin, the school's patron. The class talked about his contribution to the development of national culture and the significance of his work around the world. Pupils also learnt about Polish coins and banknotes, and pointed out on the map the capital, the longest river, the Baltic Sea, the mountain ranges and Masuria.
The anthem, a film and the school assembly
An important moment of the day was singing the national anthem together, combined with a reminder of how to stand properly while it is being performed. A short educational film showed pupils how the May holidays are celebrated in Poland and what their historical origins are.
During the school assembly, pupils heard the story of a pupil from class B1 who is passionately pursuing her love of karate. She already has a brown belt and an impressive collection of medals, and she proudly competes under the Polish flag. Her determination was a valuable lesson in perseverance for everyone.
Emblems, games and a new set book
To finish, pupils made their own Polish national emblems, and team-building games and activities helped them reinforce what they had learnt. The day ended with reading together: the children listened to the first two chapters of the set book ‘Nasza mama czarodziejka’ (Our Mum the Sorceress) by Joanna Papuzińska. The book has already captured their interest and made them curious to find out what happens to the characters next. More photos from the lessons and the assembly can be seen in the gallery.
