The theme of Saturday's lesson in one of our classes was the digraph ‘rz’. Pupils listened to Julian Tuwim's poem ‘Rzepka’ (The Turnip), made paper bats, talked about emotions, and also read and played various games.

‘Rzepka’, bats and jobs ending in ‘-rz’

After listening to a recording of the poem, the class analysed together what happened in it and how many characters took part in pulling up the turnip. As an art activity, they made black and white bats with googly eyes – and not by chance, as the word ‘nietoperz’ (bat) also contains ‘rz’.

Spelling was also reinforced through exercises on the interactive whiteboard: pupils matched the names of jobs, such as ‘żołnierz’ (soldier), ‘lekarz’ (doctor), ‘kominiarz’ (chimney sweep) and ‘drukarz’ (printer), to short descriptions, and sorted pictures into ‘ż’ and ‘rz’ columns. This is a good opportunity to learn one of the more important spelling rules: in the names of occupations, the endings ‘-arz’ and ‘-erz’ are spelt with ‘rz’, even though at the end of a word they sound like ‘-asz’ and ‘-esz’.

A conversation about emotions

As Friday was World Mental Health Day, pupils talked about emotions: how important it is to feel well, how emotions can be regulated, and what to do when we feel sad, angry or lonely. They also discussed how much it means to talk to those closest to us. The day is meant as a reminder that mental health deserves as much care as physical health.

Reading and games

Volunteers read aloud for a mark. The class found out how the class mascot, Bolesław the Badger, had spent his week, and read another chapter of ‘Karolcia’ by Maria Krüger – a classic novel about a girl who finds a magic blue bead that grants wishes. Pupils also played various games, including a card game in which they had to read an instruction and find the matching picture. So much hard work!
