The star of Saturday's lessons was the letter Ń. After the new consonant was introduced, the pupils set to work on their worksheets and practised writing it in their exercise books – in words such as ‘koń’ (horse), ‘cień’ (shadow) and ‘promień’ (ray).

In Polish, the soft consonant ń is written in two ways: with an accent mark – at the end of a word and before a consonant – or as ‘ni’ when it is followed by a vowel. That is why we write ‘leń’ (lazybones) but ‘lenie’ (plural), and ‘koń’ (horse) but ‘konie’ (horses). These were exactly the pairs of words the pupils filled in during the exercises, and at the interactive whiteboard they spun a colourful wheel to draw words with ń and copied them into their exercise books.

The next lesson began with rhythm and movement with soap bubbles. The class then talked about duties and about laziness, and the children watched a staged version of Jan Brzechwa's poem ‘Leń’ (‘The Lazybones’). With humour, the poem portrays a character who will not move from his sofa bed yet still insists that he is extremely busy. The pupils approached the analysis of the poem with enthusiasm.

Then it was time for artwork – the photos show colourful compositions made of coloured circles and glitter – and for further adventures from ‘Karolcia’. Maria Krüger's novel tells the story of a girl who finds a magic blue bead that can make dreams come true.

The pupils also wished the girls in the class celebrating their name days many happy returns and sang together. More photos from the lessons can be seen in the gallery.
