Żaneta the Frog (Żaba Żaneta) helped pupils understand the spelling rules for ‘ż’ – a letter we write, among other cases, when it alternates with ‘g’, ‘h’, ‘z’ or ‘s’ in other forms of the word or in related words (‘może – mogę’, ‘drużyna – druh’, ‘wożę – wozić’, ‘wyżej – wysoko’). The lesson was accompanied by singing, games and frog races, and the pupils made paper frogs and looked at the ‘Cykl życia żaby’ (Life cycle of a frog) chart. The lesson ended with a joke: ‘Dlaczego żaby są najmądrzejsze na świecie? Bo kumają!’ (‘Why are frogs the cleverest in the world? Because they kumają!’) – a play on words linking the croaking of frogs (kumkanie) with the colloquial ‘kumać’, meaning ‘to understand’.
