‘Do you know what sign this is: a white bird on a red field?’ asks a well-known children's rhyme. The pupils of one of our classes now know that it is the White Eagle, the emblem of Poland. To mark National Independence Day, the children coloured in the emblem, completed worksheets and made their own eagles from cardboard tubes, with crowns and with wings made from paper hand cut-outs. According to legend, Lech saw a white eagle in its nest against a sky reddened by the setting sun and made it his emblem. At the Polish school we remember 11 November and celebrate the day every year.
