St Nicholas' Day is a day like no other in our school year. Pupils in class A1 discovered that on this day anything really can happen: St Nicholas visited them with his elves, there were presents and even the mouse from the Disney films. For the children, it was a day full of excitement.
Meeting St Nicholas
The meeting with St Nicholas was organised by the Parents' Committee. Pupils posed with their guest in a festively decorated setting full of fairy lights and received gifts in colourful bags.
St Nicholas' Day (Mikołajki), celebrated in Poland on 6 December, commemorates St Nicholas, Bishop of Myra in Lycia, who lived at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries. Stories of his generosity towards those in need gave rise to the custom of giving children small presents. To this day, St Nicholas' Day gifts are among the most delightful touches of the run-up to Christmas in Polish homes and schools. Children from Polish families in Great Britain often have double the joy: they receive small gifts on St Nicholas' Day and wait for their main presents on Christmas Eve, while their British peers look out for Father Christmas on the night before Christmas Day.
Christmas crafts in the classroom
There was plenty to do in the classroom too. Pupils made door hangers reading ‘Czekam na Mikołaja’ (Waiting for St Nicholas) and snowmen with their names on them for the Christmas tree. They also decorated Christmas bags that were to hold presents for all the children. There were quizzes about St Nicholas as well – the class completed them all, and on the interactive whiteboard the children matched pictures to words such as ‘sanie’ (sleigh), ‘renifer’ (reindeer), ‘komin’ (chimney) and ‘prezent’ (present).
Thanks to the parents
Class A1 would like to thank the Parents' Committee warmly for a magical Saturday, for the presents and for unforgettable memories. The school also thanked the Committee for organising the meeting with St Nicholas, which brought the children a great deal of joy and plenty of excitement. The thanks were accompanied by these words:
Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results!
Andrew Carnegie
