At Saturday's lesson, pupils in class B2 learnt the digraph ‘dz’. They practised its correct pronunciation and spelling, and during a brainstorm they suggested words that begin with or contain ‘dz’. They consolidated what they had learnt by completing worksheets.

A digraph is two letters that represent a single sound – in Polish these also include ‘ch’, ‘cz’, ‘rz’, ‘sz’, ‘dź’ and ‘dż’. Pronouncing ‘dz’ as a single sound, for example in the words ‘dzwon’ (bell) or ‘kukurydza’ (sweetcorn), takes practice, and regular revision also helps with correct spelling.

The class then listened to the Polish legend ‘Panienka z okienka’ (The Maiden in the Window) and discussed it together. The story comes from a late 19th-century novel by Deotyma (Jadwiga Łuszczewska), set in 17th-century Gdańsk.

The class also talked about St Valentine's Day, which falls on 14 February, and about the fact that 13 February is celebrated as Self-Love Day. Each child tried to write what they love about themselves.

The pupils also made heart-shaped stained-glass pictures for their loved ones – pieces of coloured tissue paper were turned into works that were hung in the classroom windows. In addition, the class played interactive games and listened to another adventure from ‘Karolcia’, a novel by Maria Krüger that is being read aloud in class in instalments.
